Airport wildlife control does a great job of keeping birds off the runways. But those birds have to go somewhere.
For Australia’s largest cargo network, that “somewhere” turned out to be the freight terminals and logistics warehouses right next door, where massive roller doors stay wide open all day.
Once inside, the birds made themselves at home in the roof cavities and steel trusses directly above the sorting floor. This created a massive headache for a business handling the country’s mail and urgent parcels. Bird droppings contaminated packaging, ruined the hygiene of sorting gear, created health hazards for staff, and threatened compliance in strict customs and quarantine zones. Everything from conveyor belts to forklifts was in the line of fire.

The Solution: Automated Lasers
To fix the issue, the operator launched a massive deployment of 38 AVIX Autonomic laser bird repellents. Installed and deployed locally by Bird Beam—the Australian partner of Bird Control Group— the system projects a green laser beam that birds perceive as a physical object. As it sweeps programmed patterns through the roof cavity, birds instinctively flee and learn to avoid the space entirely. Best of all, the system runs completely on its own without noise, chemicals, or any disruption to the work below.
Each unit was precisely calibrated to stay within the building’s shell. This kept the laser contained entirely indoors, ensuring it remained completely safe for workers, freight, and the birds themselves.
Rapid Rollout, Immediate Results
Between October 2025 and May 2026, this massive 38-system rollout swept across the carrier’s domestic and international terminals nationwide. Bird Beam directly executed the installation and delivered the large-scale project alongside Melbourne airport construction specialist MAZ Group and Australian Electrical Industries.
The results were instant:
- Brisbane: An 80% drop in bird activity.
- Sydney: The exact same downward trend.
- Perth: Results appeared the very day the system went live
